Is My Store Ready for AI Shopping? A Self-Assessment Checklist

A plain-English checklist to assess your store's AI shopping readiness — covering schema, crawl access, product feeds, and the emerging AI commerce protocols.

AI shopping is no longer a future concept; it is happening right now. Millions of customers are turning to AI like ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews to discover and research products. For merchants, this raises a critical question: Is my store ready for AI shopping? If your store is ready, you have a direct path to these high-intent customers. If not, you are invisible.

Making your store ready for AI shopping is not about futuristic technology or complex coding. It is about clarity. It is about presenting your products in a way that AI can understand and trust. A store that is ready for AI will see its products recommended. A store that is not will be left behind. This guide will walk you through a three-layer assessment to determine if your store is truly ready for this new era of commerce.

What “AI store ready” means

Being “AI ready” means your online store speaks the language of AI agents. It means your product data is so clean, complete, and well-structured that an AI can understand your offerings as well as a human can. Maybe even better.

Think of your physical store. You have clear signs, organized shelves, and price tags on every item. Customers can easily find what they need. An AI-ready online store does the same thing, but for digital crawlers. It provides a clear, structured path for the AI to find, understand, and recommend your products.

We can break down this readiness into three distinct layers.

Layer 1: Discovery readiness

This layer is the foundation. It is about whether an AI can find your products and understand the basic facts about them. This is your digital storefront. Are the lights on and the doors unlocked?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Is my Schema.org product markup valid? Schema is the single most important element. It is the technical language that describes your product to the AI. Every product page needs a complete and valid Product schema.
  • Are my product descriptions detailed? AI reads your descriptions to understand the context and use case for your product. Generic or short descriptions are a red flag. Aim for at least 100 words of unique, helpful content.
  • Are my images high-quality? Good images are a powerful trust signal for both humans and AI.
  • Is my core data complete? This means having a price, availability, SKU, and brand for every single product in your structured data.

If you have gaps in this layer, the AI cannot even begin to consider your products.

Layer 2: Protocol readiness

If Layer 1 is about the AI finding your products, Layer 2 is about the handshake. It is about giving the AI permission and clear signals that you are open for business. This is where you follow the emerging rules of AI commerce.

Assess your protocol readiness:

  • Am I blocking AI crawlers? Check your robots.txt file. You must not block ChatGPT-User or Google-Extended. This is like locking your front door.
  • Do I have AI-specific manifest files? The new protocols for agentic commerce, ACP (Agentic Commerce Protocol) and UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol), use special files to signal readiness. These files, .well-known/acp and .well-known/ucp, are not yet mandatory everywhere, but having them is a strong, forward-looking signal that you are a serious participant.
  • Is my product feed fresh? If you use a product feed for Google or other channels, it must be updated frequently. Stale data is a major trust issue.

This layer tells the AI that you understand the new rules of the road and are actively participating.

Layer 3: Competitive positioning

This is the top layer of the pyramid. If Layers 1 and 2 make you visible, Layer 3 makes you preferred. This is about providing the rich, detailed data that helps the AI choose your product over a competitor’s.

Evaluate your competitive edge:

  • Is my variant data complete? For products with options like size or color, is that information available in your structured data? An AI cannot recommend a specific size if it does not know what sizes you have.
  • Are my policies clear? Shipping and return policy information should be easy for an AI to find and parse. This is a huge trust factor.
  • Do I have strong seller signals? This includes customer reviews, clear business contact information, and a history of being a reliable merchant.

This is the layer that separates the winners from the also-rans. It is about providing a superior data experience that makes it easy for the AI to confidently recommend your products.
